Paint Overs



After creating a few designs in ZBrush, I decided to take a couple that I thought stuck out the most and do some paint overs in Photoshop, just to get a quick idea of colour and what the creatures could end up living like.

After looking back over my designs I still knew that there was a lot of concepting required still to get a result that I would be happy with developing.

Unwrapping

Unwrapping When it came to unwrapping the alien bust, I decided to split the textures up into 4 UV sets. I first unwrapped the whole model and then created a texture set for the head, the body, the armour and the eyes. In order for these texture sets to be recognised in Substance Painter, I had to give each texture set it's own material so that Painter would know it had a separate UV. Above is the UV checker pattern used to check the UVs weren't stretched and to help maintain even texel density across the mesh. Below is the retopologised mesh with the four texture sets split up by material.

More Concepts I continued experimenting and trying to narrow down a concept for the armor that my character was going to have. For these concepts I reused a few bits that I liked from the previous concepts I had and added pieces together.

Refining Creature Concept And Anatomy

Refining Creature Concept And Anatomy I have continued to refine my creature concept by improving the anatomy and adding extra details to the face and mouth. I decided to detach the lower jaw so that I could get a better view inside the mouth, and so that I could add gums and teeth easier. I also improved on the anatomy slightly to get a better feel of how the creatures bones would stick out and it's skin would crease and wrinkle etc. I still need to improve further on it but I feel it's getting better. I experimented with adding hard surface exo-skeleton bones that would be extruding out of the skin.
