Changing The Shoulder Guard





After stepping back and analising the mesh one last time before moving on, I decided that I didn't like the right shoulder guard as I felt it didn't fit well with the design.

I went back to my armour concepts from Photoshop and used it for inspiration to create a new guard piece.

The main inspiration was this concept:




I liked the look of the dual piece, almost yin yang design which I liked the roundness of.

Unwrapping When it came to unwrapping the alien bust, I decided to split the textures up into 4 UV sets. I first unwrapped the whole model and then created a texture set for the head, the body, the armour and the eyes. In order for these texture sets to be recognised in Substance Painter, I had to give each texture set it's own material so that Painter would know it had a separate UV. Above is the UV checker pattern used to check the UVs weren't stretched and to help maintain even texel density across the mesh. Below is the retopologised mesh with the four texture sets split up by material.

Refining Creature Concept And Anatomy

Refining Creature Concept And Anatomy I have continued to refine my creature concept by improving the anatomy and adding extra details to the face and mouth. I decided to detach the lower jaw so that I could get a better view inside the mouth, and so that I could add gums and teeth easier. I also improved on the anatomy slightly to get a better feel of how the creatures bones would stick out and it's skin would crease and wrinkle etc. I still need to improve further on it but I feel it's getting better. I experimented with adding hard surface exo-skeleton bones that would be extruding out of the skin.
